Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal addressed the 16th Session of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Geneva, highlighting the world’s profound trust deficit in multilateral institutions and the challenges facing global trade. He pointed to issues like erosion of confidence in the rules-based trading system, non-market practices, tariff and non-tariff barriers, overconcentration of supply chains, and unilateral environmental restrictions dividing the world, especially in technology and services. Goyal emphasized how these challenges affect developing countries the most, who seek growth and poverty reduction. He presented India’s development journey as a model, noting India’s position among the top five global economies, fastest growth in four years, and lifting 250 million people out of poverty. Goyal praised India’s strong infrastructure investments and a services sector contributing 55% to GDP with sustained export growth.
