Hussein was only 6 months old when his family fled war-torn Aleppo for the safety of Amman. Since then, his young life has unfolded in Jordan, where he attends a public school alongside Jordanian, Iraqi and other Syrian students. Hussein holds onto the first memories of his early life to capture fragments of a homeland he barely knew. Unlike Hussein, 9-year-olds Ghina and Yahya were never in Syria. To Ghina, Syria is a beautiful land with flowers and a vast blue sea. Yahya imagines Syria as a kite, soaring free in the sky. For over a decade, Jordan has been a beacon of hope for hundreds of thousands of Syrians fleeing war. Today, the country hosts over 640,000 registered Syrian refugees, half of whom are children. Since 2011, over 212,000 Syrian refugees have been born in Jordan. The first generation of Syrian refugees knows no other home, a number that grows each month, with an average 120,000 new births registered in 2023.
