In this piano tutorial Brett talks about measures 13 to 16 of the theme to “Fur Elise” by Ludwig van Beethoven. These 4 measures can be divided up into two halves: the beginning is made up entirely of notes named “E” and the ending is made up of the notes D# and E alternating with each other. The first aha we need is that the first 8 notes can be divided up into 4 notes you can “grab” at one time and another 4 notes you can “grab” at one time. To practice, play the first four notes at the same time (the thumbs will share a key). Then play the second group of 4 notes at the same time. When you can find those notes quickly and reliably, then you are ready for the second aha. The second aha is that the left hand in this passage just goes to the place where the right had just was. Don’t leave it until the last minute to move your left hand. When your left hand is finished with the first two notes, then it should move immediately (i.e. while the right hand is playing) to go exactly to the place where the right hand is playing its notes. The third aha is that since the thumbs play the same key one right after another, then the first thumb to play must let the key go as soon as it can. The fourth aha regards the alternation of the notes D# and E. The trick here is to think “left right left” and “right right right” since counting to 6 – believe it or not – is not as easy as it sounds while you are simultaneously making music!
