Welcome to a SoHo penthouse loft reimagined by architect Thomas Leeser and his firm, Leeser Architecture: a bold yet thoughtful take on the classic New York loft. Spanning 1450 square feet, this home features an open floor plan with soaring ceilings, two terraces, and a dramatic skylight that ushers in ample light. Right as you enter, you find yourself in the living room, which flows effortlessly into the dining and sleeping areas. All of it rests on a continuous surface of reclaimed wood, giving the space warmth and texture. The walls have been stripped down to expose the building’s original structure—a move that reflects Lea’s philosophy that materials should be seen and celebrated, not hidden. “We don’t need surfaces to hide the materiality of things,” he says. Flexibility was a key component of the design from the very beginning. Much of the furniture, created by Lea’s client and collaborator Andrianna Shamaris, is made to be adaptable and easily moved rearranged so as to create a dynamic and flexible environment. At the center of the main space, a large skylight floods the loft with natural light and creates a strong visual connection to the sky. For Lea, this feature is essential to the calming atmosphere throughout. Nearby, a sculptural staircase serves as both a divider and work of art. With wood on one side and stone on the other, it infuses the layout with a sense of balance. “It’s the kind of spatial directive that controls everything,” Lea explains. As for the kitchen aesthetic? It was crafted with a minimalist mindset. Comprised mostly of glass, it overlooks the streets of Soho, keeping you connected to the city while offering a quiet escape. Appliances, including the fridges, are built into the lower cabinets to maintain a clean, uninterrupted look. “We did not want anything projecting up,” Lea points out. From there, the kitchen blends into the dining area, where reclaimed wood makes another appearance. The pairing of glass and marble with the warmth of wood adds a quiet contrast that gives each space its own identity while keeping everything cohesive. Toward the back of the loft is the sleeping area, where the bed is positioned to face a glass wall that opens to one of the terraces. A bathtub made of natural clay sits nearby, in easy reach of the rest of the bathroom, and continues the use of natural materials throughout. Moreover, the entire space remains completely open without a single door in sight. “The client was very much interested in eliminating boundaries and having a sense of freedom in using this space,” Lea says, summing up the spirit of the project.
