October Planting | Elephant Garlic | Spring Cabbage | Autumn Garden Today I finish planting our Autumn garden, first up is Elephant Garlic, not exactly a garlic although it does taste mildly of it, it is more akin to a leek. It is a great flavour and very useful in the kitchen as another layer of flavour. MY preference for it's use is in stews or casseroles or when roasting meats on a layer of veg, where the veg and meat juices mingle to make excellent gravy or sauce. I plant Elephant garlic quite deep, I want twice the depth of the garlic clove on top of the planted clove of soil. My belief is that this extra layer of soil on top helps to insulate and so prolong the growing of the root part of the plant. I have seen pro advice from garlic producers that recommend only an inch of soil on top, you can make your own decisions which to follow. Next I plant Spring cabbages, 35 of them in an area a metre square. This is a supplemental crop, grown close to produce small plants, mainly for leaves, I'll harvest these to allow remaining plants to grow on and get bigger. I also plant some beetroot and spring onions, depending on weather they could mature before Christmas, if not it will be into next year and probably into spring before I see a return from them. I have Chinese cabbage planted outside and in both tunnels, I pot on the last of these grown from seed to keep for spare plants on the shelf out of reach of pests.
