Installing stainless steel window screening

Recently I had a customer wanting stainless steel window screen installed in 5 window screens. This material has become popular due to its strength and because this is the most invisible of screen materials. In the video I start with removing the old spline using an awl. The old spline usually ends in one of the corners. Fortunately in this job the spline came out in one piece! Next I clamp the screen material down so that it is flat and square with the frame. Dollar store plastic clamps work fine for this. These screens were 46 inches tall so they worked perfectly with the 48 inch x 50 foot roll of material. Cut the excess material with a utility knife. I use a Stanley knife with a big handle because you do have to push hard with steel screening. I often have to change the blade after every screen because cutting steel wire dulls the blade very quickly. The knife is safer to use when the blade is sharp. Before rolling the spline in first you have to pre roll the steel screen pushing gently at first then harder and harder until the material conforms to the shape of the spline groove. This takes time but its important so the screen goes in perfectly straight and smooth. It's also hard on your elbows. After the pre rolling , you can roll the spline back in place. The roller I use is a ball bearing roller specifically made for screen repair. You cant use those plastic rollers at the big box stores they wont work well with stainless screening. But if you are in a bind you can use a blunt wide screwdriver. It's just very time consuming. You have to use a screwdriver to push the spline in the corners and near any pull tabs or divider bars. Work the spline and the wire cloth in together slowly at first then pushing harder. To trim the wire after you need a sharp knife and a lot of care. Its very easy to slip so keep your fingers out of the way of the blade. Don't rush, there will always be random strands of wire you need to go back and cut. I hope this has been helpful, stainless steel screen material should last many many years. It is not indestructible but certainly much stronger than fiberglass and even thicker fiberglass petscreen.
