Because mineralization/crystallization processes are not the same, this animation helps to visualize the differences is mineralization. While most remineralization approaches rely on bulk deposition of calcium phosphate, the innovative tricalcium phosphate (also referred to as functionalized TCP, fTCP) was designed to provide sustained release of low-levels of calcium and phosphate ions when used in combination with fluoride. Why is this important? Because fluoride reacts rapidly with the tooth structure, it is crucial its bioavailability is not encumbered with large amounts of calcium and phosphate. Otherwise, fluoride would likely react with the same calcium and phosphate that is being delivered to the tooth! In this undesirable situation calcium-phosphate-fluoride precipitation would collect at the tooth surface (i.e., it would 'sit' there) instead of integrating within the weakened tooth structure. This is why we created tailored forms of beta-tricalcium phosphate. These enhanced tricalcium phosphate systems have controlled dissolution properties, do not reduce fluoride's clinically proven anticaries benefits, and combine with fluoride within the tooth structure to create strong, acid-resistant enamel-like mineralization. This functionalized form of tricalcium phosphate is found exclusively in several 3M Oral Care preventive products, including Clinpro 5000, Clinpro Tooth Creme, Varnish Varnish with TCP, and more.
