Wonderful. Psychotic. Insightful. Surreal. Anders Thomas Jensen might just be your favorite director that you’ve never heard of. The director, who hails from Denmark and therefore directs films in the Danish language, has long been treasured by American cineastes as a hidden gem. For too long, what Bong Joon Ho calls the ‘1-inch tall barrier of subtitles’ has kept wider audiences from uncovering artists like Jensen, although perhaps more than ever we are in an era when subtitled films can reign supreme. Bong’s film ‘Parasite’ was handsomely rewarded at the 2020 Oscars, garnering awards for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay. It seems to have triggered a seismic shift in the way international films are treated by the Academy--suddenly, they’re no longer tucked away in the ‘International Feature’ category.
