Presented on March 19, 2025 by Marianne Padolina, DO, MS, & Vanessa Sanchez, MD Treat-to-Target or High-Intensity Statin in Patients with Coronary Artery Disease by Marianne Padolina, DO, MS For patients with coronary artery disease, statin therapy is recommended to reduce future cardiovascular events. Guidelines recommend initiating high-intensity statins in patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. An alternative approach is to begin with moderate-intensity statins and titrate to a specific low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) goal. This presentation will discuss the findings of a randomized clinical trial that evaluated the efficacy of a treat-to-target strategy compared with a high-intensity statin strategy on 3-year clinical outcomes in patients with coronary artery disease. After this presentation, attendees will be able to: • Discuss the current recommendations for lipid management for secondary prevention of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. • Review the methodology and findings of a randomized clinical trial that evaluated whether a treat-to-target strategy is noninferior to a high-intensity statin strategy in reducing adverse events in patients with coronary artery disease. • Identify the implications of this study for clinical practice. Amoxicillin Oral Challenge is Safe and Accessible for Removing Erroneous Penicillin Allergy Label by Vanessa Sanchez, MD Penicillin allergies are not uncommon to be found in medical charts, and often they may be invalid. Medication allergies such as this one frequently affect our medical decision making. Amoxicillin, a type of penicillin, may be used in individuals with low likelihood of true penicillin allergy to disprove and remove false penicillin allergies. After this presentation, attendees will be able to: • Explain the issues with incorrect medication allergy labels. • Outline what an oral provocation challenge is. • Encourage logical and sensible antibiotic stewardship practices.
