The desert can be a dangerous place. I mean, it's not called "Death Valley" for no reason, right? In this clip we see how burros (and also their relatives the mule) can detect water and have saved the lives of their human companions. The intelligence and instinct of the donkey for surviving in the desert is one of the main traits that makes the mule such an amazing animal as well. But there were also heroic people who saved others from Death Valley's intense heat and dangers. One of those was Ralph Jacobus Fairbanks, better known as Dad Fairbanks. He rescued more than 50 people from the valley over his lifetime according to some accounts. Though he couldn't get to everyone in time and he was certainly there during Death Valley's record heat wave of 1913, he did his best to save folks from the wrath of nature. But it was the Indians, the Native Americans, who knew how to survive in Death Valley's incredible heat. They simply followed the water and the elevation. If it got hot they went to higher ground where it was cooler. And everywhere they went there was water. These are stories of heroes, survival against the odds when nature deals her toughest hand.
