Located in the county of Derbyshire, and around nine miles east of Derby, is the town of Long Eaton. Geographically Long Eaton is situated in the Erewash district of Derbyshire, on the border of Nottinghamshire to the east and just north of the Leicestershire border. The Rivers Trent and Erewash run close to the town, with the Erewash Canal connecting the two via the waterways. For many centuries Long Eaton was a small agricultural village. This began to change in the early Victorian era. In 1839 the town received its first railway connection. Not long after, lace-making and railway waggon manufacturing became two major industries in Long Eaton. With the geographic location of the town around halfway between Derby and Nottingham, and with the Erewash Canal already in place, it was able to prosper in a short period of time. Owing to its unique growth arc, Long Eaton's architecture contains a high concentration of Victorian and Edwardian buildings. By the early 20th century Long Eaton housed almost 1,400 lace machines and the industry employed over 4,000 people - which accounted for around a quarter of the population. During the 1920s the lace trade experienced a sharp decline as yarn prices fell, orders were cancelled and the export side of the market suffered a large downturn. The industry's legacy is reflected in Long Eaton's well-preserved architecture, which has been repurposed predominantly for use within the service industry. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
