How did Goebbels rise to power? Joseph Goebbels began rising within the Nazi Party in the mid-1920s. In 1926, he was appointed as the Gauleiter (regional leader) of Berlin by Adolf Hitler, recognizing his skills in propaganda and oratory. Through his use of mass media, speeches, and emotional appeals, Goebbels played a key role in shaping public opinion in favor of the Nazis. After Hitler became Chancellor in 1933, Goebbels was appointed Minister of Propaganda, a position he used to control the press, cinema, arts, and information in Nazi Germany. What led to Goebbels’ downfall? As Nazi Germany collapsed in 1945, Goebbels remained loyal to Hitler until the very end. Following Hitler’s suicide on 30 April 1945, Goebbels briefly became Chancellor of Germany. However, unwilling to live in a world without National Socialism, Goebbels and his wife Magda poisoned their six children and then took their own lives in the Führerbunker on 1 May 1945.
