For many of us, work doesn’t just pay the bills. It quietly tells us who we are. For years, my job did exactly that. I didn’t just do my work — my work became my identity. And when that work disappeared, something deeper went with it. In this film, I reflect on jobs, identity, status, and what happens when the role you’ve built your sense of self around is suddenly taken away — through redundancy, burnout, illness, or change. This isn’t a story about career success or failure. It’s about what sits underneath all of that. I talk about: – how easily identity gets tangled up with work – why this can be particularly dangerous when life changes – what it feels like to become “invisible” – and how time outdoors helped strip everything back Nature doesn’t care what you do for a living. It doesn’t care about titles, status, or reputation. Out there, you’re just another living being — part of the system, not defined by your role in it. And sometimes, that’s exactly what we need to remember who we are. This film is part of our ongoing work at Burscough Community Farm, where we explore how land, seasons, and practical work can quietly teach us about confidence, wellbeing, and what actually matters. For some people, that place is a farm. For others, it might be a park, a garden, a walk, or a fire. Nature is the teacher. You just have to spend time with it.
