This episode examines how the Mongols endured the harsh winters of the open steppe by creating mobile winter camps in one of the coldest inhabited places on Earth. It explains how yurts and temporary felt shelters were positioned to reduce wind exposure, retain warmth, and remain easy to transport even in temperatures as low as –50°C. The film also looks at daily survival inside the camps, where people slept on thick layers of felt and animal furs, often close to their livestock which helped provide extra warmth and shelter from the wind. Choosing the right camp location, planning seasonal migrations, and organizing the layout of shelters were all essential for enduring the extreme cold. Rather than being built for comfort, these camps were carefully designed systems meant for mobility, resilience, and survival in one of the harshest environments on the planet.
