This fungal rust is killing the crop, costing farmers money to supply fungicides in an attempt to save their crop and still turn a profit. The first rust, discovered in 1999, has since spread into the farmlands in Kenya's rift valley all the way to Yemen and Iran. The fear is that under the right climate conditions, stem rust will continue to spread further east. Farmers attempt to combat the new fungus with fungicides, but the fear is that the crop will develop resistance to those fungicides before new ones can be developed. University of Minnesota scientists are working to identify a resistant gene to the stem rust, but they do not expect to find the right combination of resistant genes for another six years. Farmers and scientists are locked in an ongoing battle to beat the fungus before it can destroy the wheat crop.
