Canadian National's Grand Trunk Western is a major player in Detroit, along with Norfolk Southern, CSX, and Conrail Shared Assets. This particular quick trip to Motown yielded some fascinating things: To begin, a GTW GP38 brings a long load of Ford chassis for the River Rouge plant across the NS diamonds at Ford's River Rouge plant, while a local job with CN power waits. Later, a fantastic catch in River Rouge between Nicholson Terminal & Dock and Great Lakes Steel: a heavily modified, remote-controlled SW (with crew nonetheless), transporting a hot-metal "bottle" car between sections of the steel plant, on the Delray Connecting Railroad. Further south, in the suburb of Flat Rock, two Grand Trunk Western GP38-2s shove a mixed freight into CN's Woodhaven Yard. With the blue GTW geeps, this scene could be straight out of the 1980s!
