The idea behind the yes ladder is simple: ask a series of easy, agreeable questions to build momentum toward a “yes” at the end. But in real fundraising conversations? That tactic often backfires. People today are more aware—and more resistant—than ever. They don’t want to be nudged. They want to be respected. In this video, you’ll learn: ✅ Why the “yes ladder” feels manipulative—and why that matters in ethical fundraising ✅ What psychology says about “no” and how it can build real trust ✅ The exact language I use instead to start real, human conversations that actually convert 💬 Here are some of the powerful “no-oriented” questions I now use: “Do you mind if I tell you why I got involved in this?” A personal opener that builds rapport and shows heart. It invites people into your story without forcing a reaction. “Is it crazy to think we all want a world like that?” This one frames the vision—your cause—as a shared hope. Ideal after painting the big picture, it taps into collective values. “Would it be unreasonable to ask for your help today?” A respectful, low-pressure call to action that lowers resistance by making the ask feel fair and grounded. “Would now be the worst time to take action?” This reverses urgency in a gentle way. It gets people thinking about timing, without pushing. “Would you mind sharing what’s holding you back?” A brilliant objection handler. It surfaces hidden concerns without confrontation and often leads to honest, useful dialogue. “Is there any reason this wouldn’t be a good fit for you right now?” Encourages reflection and often opens the door to a reconsideration. “Would you be against starting with something small?” A perfect soft close. Great for someone who’s hesitant but open—it lowers the barrier without lowering the value. “Is there anything stopping you from being part of the solution?” An empowering final reframe. This one hits emotionally—turning support into something active and meaningful. These aren’t just better questions—they’re better tools.
