Ma begins the day with a feeding for her chicks - then she will lay a stick over the nest bowl creating separate bedrooms for them - a stick room divider! It didn't take 53 long to crawl around the stick to get to the other side for a feeding! She then flew off but returned and moves the stick off the nest bowl allowing them free reign! Ma will give another feeding to both chicks, then she goes to the center of the nest and does some digging and pulls up 55's body and brings to the other side of the nest. Ma does consume some of the remains & leaves the rest there on the side. This is normal behavior for the eagles as she does not think of this as her baby but as a food source. Eagles live in the present moment and once she realized FSV55 had died she moved on (and the same for FSV52). This allows the raptors and other animals to continue to propagate their species and is a blessing in a way as we humans experience grief & take to process death before we can move forward. It was fitting that she gave life to 55 and then 55 became food and life back to her. Thank you for watching! Pa FSV was captured and banded as an adult by a wildlife biologist working with the Denver International Airport - his age is unknown. What does the Fort St. Vrain bald eagle site look like? The eagles' nest (FSV-N0) is 9 x 8 feet wide, eight feet high, and 57 feet off the ground. It has a perimeter of about 26 feet, a total area of about 56 feet, and probably weighs between 2200 and 2700 pounds! The nest is located in a cottonwood on the banks of the St. Vrain River near Platteville, CO, on property owned by Xcel Energy. We’re not sure how old it is, but Bob Anderson and Rob MacIntyre put the first cam system up in 2003, when the nest was already well established. FSV-N0 is built primarily of cottonwood branches (the dominant tree in many river systems out west) and lined with prairie grass. After the primary limb supporting the nest fell in August of 2020, RRP Director John Howe worked with Xcel Energy to put up a new bionic limb and restore the nest. The eagles gave it their seal of approval just a few days later!
