God’s Word for Today 15 Jan, 2026 13 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. 14 But it will be more bearable in the judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you. 15 And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You shall be brought down to Hades. 16 “The one who hears you hears me, and the one who rejects you rejects me, and the one who rejects me rejects him who sent me." -Luke 10:13-16 ESV Jesus expresses grief. He mourns places that have every reason to accept His message but refused. Chorazin and Bethsaida are specific places, but they are representative of any town that rejects the call to repentance, as seen in the reference to "a town" and "that town." (v.8, 12). Historians are unsure as to Chorazin's exact location. It is only mentioned here and in Matthew's parallel passage (Mat 11:21). Bethsaida, on the other hand, is on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee. Peter, Andrew, and Philip come from Bethsaida, and it's near where Jesus miraculously fed thousands (John 1:44; Luke 9:10). Other than that, we only know that Jesus healed a blind man there (Mark 8:22). Apparently, however, they had witnessed enough miracles that they had no excuse. Jesus says that two pagan, Gentile cities [Tyre and Sidon] would have reacted more favorably to His miracles and message than Chorazin and Bethsaida, populated largely by Jews. Later on, He will make a similar comparison between the Jewish religious leaders who keep insisting on signs and the Queen of Sheba who believed because she saw the wisdom of Solomon. What happened in Nineveh is more shocking. The evil, vicious, and cruel men of Nineveh repented because of Jonah's message. However, the Jews who have every advantage refuse to repent and believe. (Luke 11:29–32). That it will be more bearable in the judgment for Tyre and Sidon. This indicates there are different levels of punishment in hell. The more an unbeliever knows about God, Jesus, and the offer of salvation (Romans 1:18–21) and he chooses to reject that offer (see Mat 7:7–8), the more they are culpable for their sin of rebellion. Chorazin and Bethsaida—and especially Capernaum (Luke 10:15)—saw Jesus' miraculous powers and heard Him teach. The people around Tyre and Sidon witnessed comparatively little. Consequently, the people of northeastern Galilee will face a much harsher judgment in eternity than the Gentiles of Phoenicia. God is just. Should a person have more privileges and access to the truth, he has more accountability than another who is restricted. A child raised in a Christian home is more accountable to God than a child born in a non-Christian home. He has better access to the gospel message than one who is born in a pagan home.
