AI for Strengthening Healthcare Systems in Low- and Middle-income Countries: A Perspective from Peru

Dr. Walter H. Curioso is a physician, public health expert, and biomedical informatician with over two decades of leadership across academia, government, and international organizations. He holds a Ph.D. in Biomedical Informatics and a Master of Public Health (MPH) from the University of Washington, as well as a Medical Degree from Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in Lima, Peru. Dr. Curioso is currently Vice Provost of Research at Universidad Continental in Peru and Affiliate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Informatics and Medical Education at the University of Washington School of Medicine. He is a Fellow of the International Academy of Health Sciences Informatics (IAHSI) and a Member of the National Academy of Medicine of Peru. His extensive career includes senior public health leadership roles in the Peruvian government, and international consultancy with the World Health Organization (WHO), the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America (ECLAC), the U.S: National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). He was also member of the WHO´s Digital Health Roster of Experts. He has published over 140 academic works and focuses on the intersection of technology and equity in health systems, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.
