I’m in the early stages of writing and illustrating a children’s picture book, and this week I hit a wall designing my main characters. These watery creatures from an island called Old Zealand weren’t working — until an unexpected breakthrough happened while drawing with my three-year-old daughter. In this video, I walk through my character design process, how master copies of legendary illustrators like Dean Cornwell and Wouter Tulp helped refine my fundamentals, and why shifting from anatomy-first drawing to story-driven character design completely changed everything. If you’re an illustrator, picture book creator, or artist struggling with stiff character designs, this video is about: • Using master studies to improve illustration fundamentals • Designing characters through story moments • Solving anatomy problems through narrative constraints • Finding creative breakthroughs in unexpected places This is part of my ongoing process documenting how I’m building a picture book from scratch — from worldbuilding and character development to landscape design and storytelling. ⸻ Timestamps: 0:00 – My 3-Year-Old Saved My Main Character 0:07 – Designing Water Creatures for Old Zealand 0:23 – Master Copies + Original Sketches Process 1:08 – Studying Dean Cornwell & Wouter Tulp 1:58 – Why Master Copies Improve Character Design 2:31 – The Story Pivot: From Water to Watery Creatures 3:01 – The Stretch Scene Problem (Anatomy Challenge) 3:35 – Drawing with My Daughter (The Breakthrough) 4:11 – Story-Driven Character Design 5:01 – Filling the Sketchbook with Movement & Story 6:38 – Applying Fundamentals Without Overthinking 8:22 – A Relational Breakthrough (Knowing the Characters) 8:41 – Designing the Landscape of Old Zealand 9:00 – Traveling to East Texas & Finding Inspiration ⸻ If you enjoy behind-the-scenes picture book illustration, character design tutorials, and creative process videos, subscribe and follow along as I build this story world one sketchbook page at a time.
