Ereshkigal (Sumerian: "Queen of the Great Earth") is one of the most compelling and formidable figures in the ancient Mesopotamian pantheon. As the absolute ruler of Kur (the Underworld), she presided over the land of the dead—a gloomy, dust-filled realm from which there was generally no return. Unlike her sister Inanna (Ishtar), who represented the vitality of the heavens and earth, Ereshkigal embodied the cold, inevitable reality of death and the strict laws of the afterlife. She was the sole judge and queen of the dead. While other gods feasted in the heavens, Ereshkigal was often confined to her subterranean palace, Ganzir, guarding the "Seven Gates" of the Underworld to ensure no soul escaped. Myths depict her as fierce, uncompromising, and sometimes deeply tragic. She is the enforcer of cosmic balance; she cannot leave her realm, nor can the living easily visit her. She is often shown as resentful of the light and life enjoyed by the gods above.
