RACERODS PART 1: Rough, raw, and rowdy, this 1973 Chevy Nova, built by the legendary NASCAR chassis builder Ivan The Terrible Baldwin, raced the NASCAR Winston West series before being abandoned for 40 years. Rescued and revived by Lance Smith with a period-correct 358 ci small-block Chevy V8 and a Muncie Rock Crusher 4-speed transmission, it’s now a “RaceRod” — a street-legal race car that remains almost exactly as it hit the short track, complete with buzzard bars and a danger switch. Nicole Johnson explores Lance’s insane collection of abandoned, historic race cars in East County San Diego. From its rough patina to its ferocious engine, this ex-stock car is pure, unfiltered adrenaline on wheels, ripping through the backroads in this unapologetic piece of racing history.
