We insert the laparoscope into the abdominal cavity and meddle with these organs outside. One thing is you should not meddle with the uterus. So pregnancy is inside the uterus. So if there is need for it, you can do laparoscopy in pregnancy also. We have to take extra precautions. There are some surgeries that can be done in pregnancy. The pregnant uterus is there and he pregnant lady develops cyst in the adnexa, usually cysts are there, we have to remove the cyst. ln olden days there was no laparoscopy and we had to make an opening in the abdomen and remove it but with the advent of laparoscopy, we have to make small holes, called as nicks and through that we can meddle and remove the cysts and that way we don’t give a big scar ads so the amount of rest required and the mobility is more easy to maintain. So there are some surgeries which are needed to be done in pregnant ladies, the commonest things is appendicectomy. Appendix is one organ in the intestines and appendicectomy, if not tackled when the lady is pregnant then it is a very dangerous thing for the life of the pregnant lady, vase the infection spreads more rapidly . That is an advantage ad it us used in laparoscopic method gall stones is also done in laparoscopically and it can be removed without disturbing the pregnancy. Also any adnexal mass, those can also be removed even when patient is having pregnancy inside her womb. So as an obstetrician we do are in the pregnant lady by giving her extra supporting hormone to avoid abortion. One disadvantage of laparoscopy is we inflate the abdomen with carbondioxide and with the carbon dioxide only we can see all the organs in the abdomen. So when the carbon dioxide increases it can have effect on the blood flow to the fetus. So that is disadvantages. So taking care of these factors the anesthetist and the obstetrician plans in such a way so that the damage doesn’t happen to the pregnancy and we can tackle it carefully. So this is one disadvantage of laparoscopically. So this is the advantage of the laparoscope compared to the open method. So most important thing is the big wounds are not there. When would are there then healing is problem and there are chances of wound infection. So these are all avoided by using laparoscope and most of the intestines around the uterus. So the bowel getting infected is minimal with laparoscopic surgeries.
