The C53 Felipe Xicotencatl, sunken wreck is the most popular wreck dive in the Caribbean. It was deliberately sunk June of 2000, to create an artificial reef in Cozumel, Mexico's Chankanaab Marine Park. It’s easily accessible from nearly every resort in Cozumel. It rests upright on the sandy seabed at a depth of about 82 feet and is an impressive 200 feet long. It has become one of the most visited and popular wrecks in the Caribbean. It’s a popular dive site a favorite among recreational divers due to its shallow depth and excellent visibility and easy access. Underwater photographers love the shafts of ethereal lighting on the C53 as well as the abundance of sea-life, coral and sponges that has adopted the wreck as home. Schools of fish dart in and out of the openings and seek refuge in most of the rooms. Through the cargo hold wide-open spaces make navigation straightforward even for less experienced divers. There’re multiple passage ways and rooms to explore with dark holes and corners to peer into that are often inhabited by resourceful sea crreatures. Shafts of light pierce the ship's passageways illuminating rusty beams and old once working valves and equipment. In the bowels of the boat it's easy to find the crew living quarters and toilets. It's an invitation to sit and pause awhile. And if you’re lucky, you may get a glimpse of the Atlantis tourist submarine passing by with amazed passengers peering out, wishing they were exploring the wreck like the divers they are seeing.This wreck is an underwater photographer’s dream, with marine life, and ethereal sunlight filtering through the water.
