Switching Up Our Understanding of Protein Folds with AI

Back in 2020, Dr. Lauren Porter’s work focused primarily on learning more about proteins that can change their structures and functions in response to changes in the cell, called fold-switching proteins. These proteins are associated with conditions such as cancer, Alzheimer’s, and autoimmune dysfunction. Her recent research at NLM’s Division of Intramural Research centers around collecting more examples of fold switching and using these examples to improve AlphaFold, an AI method for protein structure prediction. This work can help researchers to better understand the fundamental principles of why fold switching happens in the first place, use those principles to develop better therapies for diseases, and ultimately discover more about how proteins—and life itself—works. https://www.nlm.nih.gov/research/rese... #humanhealth #protiens
