This lecture introduces the reference frames used to model three-phase power systems and wind turbine components. The stationary abc, alpha-beta, and synchronous dq reference frames are presented, together with the Clarke and Park transformations used to convert variables between frames. The lecture also explains the mathematical interpretation of these transformations, their scaling factors, and their connection with the per-unit system. Vector magnitude and power expressions in transformed coordinates are analyzed, showing how active and reactive power can be computed in both alpha-beta and dq frames. Finally, the network, grid-side converter (GSC), and machine-side converter (MSC) reference frames are defined and justified for subsequent modeling and control design.
