“How did the birthplace of socialized medicine become a hotbed of commodity-fueled conservatism? In a world where major democracies are gripped by populist fevers, Dale Eisler explores the relevance and applicability of Prairie politics to the body politic in Canada. In a distinct Saskatchewan voice, he unpacks a history in which potash and petrol helped tilt traditionally progressive voters toward conservatism. Superbly researched, From Left to Right brings us to the intersection of forces that are fuelling populism on regional, national, and global stages.” — 2023 Shaughnessy Cohen Prize Jury (Terri E. Givens, Nik Nanos, and Jacques Poitras) About the Book Over the last fifty years, Saskatchewan has undergone fundamental political and economic changes that have dramatically altered its identity. The story of its transformation, in which the once powerful New Democratic Party has been relegated to the political margins to make way for the centre-right Saskatchewan Party, reaches far beyond the province itself and reflects national and global events that have shaped it over the course of the last half century. From Left to Right presents modern Saskatchewan politics as less about ideology and more about the lure of populist leaders who speak to an identity rooted in the province’s history. About Dale Eisler Dale Eisler spent 25 years as a journalist before moving on to senior roles with the federal government, including consul general for Canada in Denver and assistant deputy minister at Natural Resources Canada. In 2013 he received the Joan Atkinson Federal Public Service Award of Excellence. Eisler is the author of three works of nonfiction and one novel, which is based on his family history and became the basis for a feature film. Eisler lives in Regina where he is a senior policy fellow at the Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy. writerstrust.com/ShaughnessyCohen #ShaughnessyCohen
