Dr. Tanya Maus, Director of the Quaker Heritage Center, speaks on the Quakers who migrated and settled in southwest Ohio. In the first decades of the 19th century, thousands of Quakers migrated west to southwest Ohio from the southeastern part of the United States resulting in one of the largest populations of Quakers in the United States at that time. This talk will consider the historical complexities of slavery and abolitionism as factors in Quaker migration from the south to southwest Ohio and the impact of Quaker migration on American Indian tribal nations in southwest Ohio. Dr. Tanya Maus serves as the Quaker Heritage Center (QHC) director and the Peace Resource Center director at Wilmington College. With a Ph.D. in History from the University of Chicago, Dr. Maus has directed the work of both centers at Wilmington College, a Quaker liberal arts college in southwest Ohio. The Quaker Heritage Center educates present and future generations of diverse audiences about historical and living traditions and concerns of the Religious Society of Friends. As director of the QHC, Dr. Maus collaborates with Wilmington College student staff to create awareness of the Quaker mission and vision of the College in local and regional communities through exhibits, lectures, and programming.
