“Missouri Prairies en Plein Air” was an exhibit at the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art from November 20, 2015 thru January 10, 2016. It contained 128 paintings documenting Missouri’s prairies throughout all four seasons, various times of day and night, in a variety of weather conditions, along with images of controlled prairie burns, close-up intimate scenes, and vast views, all completed 100% en plein air. A label accompanied each plein air canvas, documenting its location, completion time frame, weather conditions, and brief narratives about that day. When imagining a prairie, the scene that materializes in many minds is a vast open space that consists of sky and horizon. My goal was to capture on canvas the far more diverse range of settings and beauty our prairies possess beyond that simple horizon line. Throughout this project, my appreciation for the prairies multiplied, my wonder soared and my awareness of them expanded. When asked if I was getting tired of painting prairies, my one word answer was, “Nope.” My hope for the show, just as it did for me painting it, was to inspire more people to visit their local prairies, witness their beauty, experience their wonder, and discover the important roll they play. It doesn’t matter if the prairie is 400 acres or one acre (prairie patches, as I like to call them), they are all worth a visit. If you don’t know of any in your area, a quick internet search will reveal them. The Missouri Prairie Foundation is a great place to start. Thank you for your time, M.
