During our ground coverage of Maharashtra assembly elections 2019, Team Lallantop reached a tehsil named Shirpur in Dhule district of North-east Maharashtra. Shirpur is famous for its Shirpur model of water conservation and groundwater recharging. Former Maharashtra education minister Amrish Patel with the help of a geologist named Suresh Khanapurkar of Groundwater Survey and Development Agency (GSDA), Pune, initiated this model. It is considered to be a miraculous cure for drought. Maharashtra is among the Indian states facing severe water crisis. However, situations in Shirpur is different. Locals claim it's all because of the Shirpur model of water conservation. Some of the criticis of this model point towards some serious ecological concerns. They say Shirpur model is not suitable for other regions in Maharashtra due to the presence of basalt. Water crisis and farmer suicide is a major issue in Maharashtra. The state is going into polls on October 21. Results for the assembly polls will be announced on October 24. Incumbent Devendra Fadnavis government is fighting along with its alliance partner Shivsena. NCP and Congress, too, are back again as a coalition force.
