Firesteel was one of the most important elements of everyday life of people in the Middle Ages - especially in cold and dark Scandinavia where fire played an even greater role. It is no wonder that the Vikings paid great attention to their firesteels and were able to forge them into many sophisticated shapes. To forge the firesteel I used 3 pieces of metal - modern steel (the upper 'pyramid' part), wrought iron (the middle twisted part) and tool steel (the spark-causing edge).
