Tonguecan show different varieties of lesions,both red lesions, white lesions, there will be some black pigments on the tongue. So some of them are normalvariations and some could be injurious later. So most commonly what we see is candidiasis, mostly we see in HIV patients and immune compromised patients. There is something called leukoplakia, again a white lesion on the tongue which is most commonly seen in patients having smoking habit. Chronic smokers there are other lesions like lichen planus, which there are varieties like reticular lichen planus and erosive lichen planus These also appear as white lesions on the tongue and buccal mucosa. There are other reasons which are most often seen as geographic tongue or wanderer’s tongue which are again seen as white lesion, appearing in different areas of the tongue. So, thorough examination of these lesions has to be done by dentist or an oral medicine specialist. He can rule out between a normal and abnormal conditions. If it is lesions like leukoplakia or candidiac lesions, you need a treatment from the dentist. He will prescribe you some antibiotics, some anti fungal mouth rinses and effectively these reason can be stopped. Lesions however you treatment like reticular lichen planus or geographic tongue, these lesions usually don’t go with any kind of treatment. So these are not harmful to the patient, and this is a normal variation, you don’t have to worth their religions.
