Kartika — The Auspicious Star of Amma’s Birth Amma was born under the star Kārtika (കാർത്തിക) — the third star in the Hindu lunar calendar — in the Malayalam month of Kanni (കന്നി), which falls between mid-September and mid-October. Every month, on the day of Kārtika, special pujas are conducted at the Kalari — Amma’s ancestral home’s cowshed, which was later transformed into a temple. It was here that Amma first began giving darshan, meeting people, meditating, and singing bhajans during the early days of the Ashram.
