In this video, Dr. Puru Dhawan will discuss whether a kidney patient can intake salt or not. Dr. Puru Dhawan has seen many patients who have this same query about whether they can have salt or not and, if yes, how much and which one they should have. First, we will understand what happens in a kidney failure patient's body. When struggling with kidney failure, the patient's kidneys gradually lose their function as the kidney function decreases all the work it does, such as flushing out toxins, creatinine, and urea stops. This leads to the accumulation of these toxins in the body. Not just our heart but even our kidneys also assist the body by controlling the blood pressure levels. There are three organs in our body that help us control blood pressure levels they are the kidneys, the heart, and the brain. If your Kidneys are deteriorating, there are higher chances that your blood pressure is on the rise or it will rise in some time. That is why all kidney patients are advised to take low amounts of salt in their diet. Because when we consume salt, it increases blood pressure which increases the load upon the kidneys as well as the heart. This is why all kinds of salty food items are strictly prohibited for kidney patients. Always make sure to lower the intake of salt in your diet and also use little spices just for the taste. Salt does increase the taste of any food item, but we cannot risk our health on the basis of taste. In the market, there are two types of salts available one which is iodized salt and second rock salt. The iodized salt is the pure form of sodium chloride, which contains excessive sodium in them and less iodine which is really needed for our body. The rock salt that we get is naturally produced by nature when a river or pond dries up. Basically, rock salt is found in the mountains. As the rock salt is naturally produced, the percentage of sodium and potassium isn't in control. Sodium increases blood pressure, whereas potassium decreases it, which is why this salt does not increase blood pressure. But too much potassium is also harmful to our health, so it is recommended to intake a low amount of rock salt if needed. Accordingly, use these salts if your BP or potassium increases. To manage the blood pressure, reduce the salt intake and only use a pinch of salt every meal if needed; by doing this, you can manage BP without medicines. Avoiding salt doesn't mean you should have tasteless food. You can use other spices that are available, leaving red or green chilies because they have acid compounds that increase the secretion of acid. It is also seen those kidney patients who intake too much salt to control their BP face problems like water retention in their body. Due to water retention, swelling starts to develop on the face and legs. And when this happens, the heart has to pump much harder, which leads to high blood pressure resulting in kidney damage. Next, in the video, a kidney patient will share his experience of struggling with a kidney disorder and how he was able to treat it in just 15 days with the help of Ayurvedic treatment at SRIAAS.
