Chris answers Anthony from NYC who asked: Should You Be Blunt And Tell People What You Actually Think? (ask Chris your hottest business question at: https://ChrisGuerriero.com/ask) Well let’s think about this… How many people in your life tell YOU the honest to God truth about what you’re working on, or about your vision, or about the BIG decisions you make? And there’s really two sides of the coin with this topic. The first is how you speak to people. Are you going to be blunt – even when it’s difficult to be, OR … if it’s a tough conversation, are you going to water things down a little bit so you don’t hurt the other person’s feelings? The other side of the coin is, how you train others to talk to you. For example: Do you think life would be easier if you had people around you who told you THE TRUTH, or would you rather NOT hear everyone’s thoughts – so you can just keep doing what you’re doing? I’ll tell you what’s best in business, but first think about that for a second? What do you feel most comfortable with in your life? Personally, early on in my career I used to tell people what I THOUGHT THEY WANTED TO HEAR and I very possibly may have done some of them a disservice by doing that. Because as I started building companies, I discovered that the TRUTH, spoken from EXPERIENCE, is so rare in business. And it’s the people who have access to the TRUTH backed up by EXPERIENCE that always WIN. Not your OPINION, but your EXPERIENCE! You might keep your opinion to yourself in business, but when you know from EXPERIENCE that someone should do something different, for their personal growth, or to align with the company brand, you tell them. If I don’t have experience, then I shut up. And before I knew that, I was never able to make a big profit, and grow companies, and build leadership teams, until I became very blunt in how I communicated with the people around me. With my team With vendors and with my friends too Being blunt in business, not meaning that you’re rude, but telling people the truth (in a kind way) so they’re never guessing at what you’re thinking, makes the right people feel comfortable. And the year I started being more open with people about how they’re doing, and about what I needed from them, was the first year we not only met but exceeded our target revenue.
