ABOUT KELMSCOTT Kelmscott is a small village in West Oxfordshire, sitting peacefully on the north bank of the River Thames, close to Lechlade. Its history stretches back to the Domesday Book of 1086, where it was recorded as “Chelmescote.” For centuries, it remained a rural farming settlement, surrounded by meadows and orchards that still shape its landscape today. The village’s most famous resident was William Morris (1834–1896), the artist, poet, and leader of the **Arts and Crafts movement**. He discovered Kelmscott in 1871 and made Kelmscott Manor his summer home. The Manor, a 16th-century farmhouse built in traditional Cotswold stone, became a central source of inspiration for his work, celebrated in his writings and designs for its natural beauty and craftsmanship. Kelmscott Manor remains one of England’s most important heritage sites, preserved by the Society of Antiquaries. It stands surrounded by traditional stone cottages, old barns, and quiet lanes that echo the rural life Morris cherished.
