My Amazing Planter Boxes with Ranunculus Flowers

Planter Boxes provide gorgeous opportunities to grow flowers! The also elevate a less attractive area and hide areas you don't want seen. These planter boxes have become such a joy to us; filled with colourful Ranunculus flowers for spring long blooms. The planter boxes were made from old wooden sleepers I had laying around. I cut them to size then screwed them together to form long narrow boxes without bottoms. Each box was stacked on top of another to make them two sleepers tall, then braced with a scrape piece of timber on the inside of each end to stop them from moving and becoming misaligned. The space inside each planter box is pretty large, and would take a lot of soil to fill. I filled the bottom half of each planter with sticks and logs I found around our property then added in a mix of clean fresh soil and local horse manure on top. It has sank down a little now, maybe by around 2 inches, so I will top the soil up after the Ranunculus die off. Underneath the planters is 3-4 layers of weed mat. I really don't want our invasive grasses getting up through the bottom of the planters or sneaking up through one of the sides. I check regularly (maybe monthly) to see if any grasses are starting to make their way in there. It is a little bit of maintenance, but will be worth it in the long run. I planted the Ranunculus corms in late Autumn and waited! They got to around 10cm tall and our resident Wallaby family ate them down... all of them. Being Autumn I knew they would be ok and grow back so we left them under a net for as long as possible - until the flowers started to bud up. Come Spring and we have this amazing and gorgeous display of fresh colourful flowers. It makes us SO HAPPY! This project has been something that took some effort and some waiting time but has been so worth it, and we will have it for years to come.
