Come join us for a rainy travel day on Vancouver Island, BC as we continue our road trip to Parksville and Qualicum Beach to visit Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park and Englishman River Falls Provincial Park. After a quick stop at Qualicum Beach, we drove towards Rathtrevor Beach, which is a provincial park located in the east end of Parksville. This spot is known for its wide sandy beaches - especially during low tide when the water recedes almost a kilometre from shore! It was pretty cool to see. And now: bunnies! Just as we were leaving the park we spotted what we thought was one lone black rabbit looking out of place, but as we rounded the corner, we discovered it was a whole colony! They were very cute. Then it was onwards to Englishman River Regional Park where we went in search of the two waterfalls. Well, I’m not sure we took the right trail since we never did find them, but who can complain about wandering the wrong way in a forest when you’re surrounded by towering cedars, Douglas firs, and ferns all around. After a wet and rainy day of exploring we built up a big appetite so we ended up frying up some cod in butter and serving it with sweet potatoes and carrots along with some delicious wine from Chile. We hope you enjoyed our BC road trip episode to Parksville and Qualicum Beach. Stay tuned as we have three more episodes from our Vancouver Island, BC series left with adventures from Campbell River, Nanaimo and Victoria coming your way. Qualicum Beach, Parksville & Englishman River Falls: Exploring Vancouver Island’s Best Beaches & Rainforest Trails 🌲🌊 | Coastal Day Trip, Hidden Bunnies & Rainy Day Vibes 🌤️ Starting Our Adventure: Detours & Arrival at Qualicum Beach 🚗🏖️ Good morning from Qualicum Beach! We kicked off our day by heading south from Comox, navigating a few unexpected detours thanks to a closed stretch of the coastal highway. While the reroute took some extra time, it gave us a scenic view before dropping us right at the shores of Qualicum Beach. Low tide revealed a vast bed of pebbles, seashells, seaweed, and mud—perfect for a stroll, even if our shoes got a little wet. Despite the overcast skies, the calm and open coastline set a relaxed tone for the day. 🏕️ Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park: Tim Hortons Pit Stop & Sandy Wonders ☕️🏝️ Before our next stop, we grabbed a classic Canadian lunch at Tim Hortons—soups, chili, sandwiches, and of course, coffee and donuts. No Canadian road trip is complete without Timmy’s! We then arrived at Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park in Parksville, a destination known for its incredibly wide sandy beaches. At low tide, the water recedes nearly a kilometer from shore, making for an endless stretch of sand with just a handful of visitors. The park is perfectly set up for both campers and day-trippers, and we admired the impressive RVs lined up in the camping areas. Even with changing weather and sudden showers, the beauty of the beach and the scale of the driftwood and trees were remarkable. 🌧️ Embracing the "Wet Coast" Life: Rain, Forests & Giant Ferns 🌿☔ Rain is a way of life on BC’s west coast (or as locals call it, the "wet coast"), but that never stops anyone here! The lush, almost tropical-looking ferns and the intricate bark patterns on massive old-growth trees thrive in this damp climate. We noticed that people here simply put on rain jackets and boots—umbrellas are rare, and nobody lets the weather keep them indoors. For us, it was a novelty, but we quickly learned to enjoy walking in the rain and soaking up the forest’s beauty. 🐇 Unexpected Wildlife: Black Rabbit Colony Surprise! 🐰🌳 As we left Rathtrevor, a black rabbit caught our eye. Rounding the bend, we discovered it wasn’t alone—it was part of a whole colony! The cute, unexpected sighting added a bit of whimsy to our day before we continued our drive. 🌲 Englishman River Falls Provincial Park: Towering Trees & Rainforest Hikes 🚶♂️🌧️ Next, we made our way to Englishman River Falls Provincial Park in search of waterfalls. We may have taken the wrong trail (the waterfalls eluded us this time), but it’s hard to complain when you’re wandering through towering cedars and Douglas firs, surrounded by a true rainforest. The air was thick with the scent of earth and ferns, and signs warned us that this is cougar country. As the rain started to pour more heavily, we wrapped up our hike, content with a proper rainforest experience. 🌧️ Reflections & Vancouver Island Travel Tips 🚦📝 Despite the rain and a few missed turns, we had a fantastic day—beaches, forests, local wildlife, and a home-cooked meal. Here’s what we learned: Be ready for rain: Embrace it with raincoats and boots—don’t let it stop you from enjoying the outdoors.
