The Presiding Deity is Lord Patteeswarar who is an incarnation of Lord Shiva. The Temple was built in the Second Century by the Karikala Cholan on the banks of River Noyyal. Lord Patteeswarar's Consort is known as Pachainayaki. The Deity is believed to be a Swayambhu Lingam. Raja Raja Chola is said to have visited here and helped in some construction activities which was followed up later by the Rulers of Hoysala, Vijayanagara Empires etc. The Temple has several Gopurams and Halls, of which Kanaka Sabha where Lord Nataraja is found as a Golden Statue is very famous. The Patti Vinayagar Shrine of Lord Ganesha is also found. Every year the Temple celebrates a typical Barathanatyam Dance festival.
