永平寺は、福井県吉田郡永平寺町にある曹洞宗の仏教寺院。總持寺と並ぶ日本曹洞宗の大本山。開山は道元禅師。 約800年に及ぶ永平寺の歴史の歩みは、困難とともにありました。火災による伽藍の喪失や時代の波にもまれ、永平寺は困窮と復興を繰り返し今日に至っています。 永平寺は、深山幽谷な里山の老杉が茂る森の中にあり、70を超えるお堂と楼閣が建ち並びます。七堂伽藍と呼ばれる山門、仏殿、法堂、僧堂、大庫院、浴室、東司など主要伽藍が回廊で結ばれています。七堂伽藍は僧侶が修行をする清浄な場所として特に重要な建物とされています。今も200名前後の若い雲水たちが、厳しい禅の修行を励んでいます。永平寺での修行は禅宗の中で最も厳しいといわれております。 曹洞宗の宗祖道元は正治2年（1200年）に生まれました。14歳で比叡山延暦寺に入山、貞応2年（1223年）に渡宋し、4年後に修行を終え帰国しました。日本へ戻った道元は、旧仏教勢力の比叡山から激しい迫害に遭うこととなります。 道元は信徒であった越前に領地を持つ波多野義重の請いにより越前に赴き迫害を避けるのでした。寛元元年（1243年）のことであります。そして、寛元2年（1244年）に道元はこの地に大佛寺を建立しました。これが永平寺の開創であり、寛元4年（1246年）に永平寺と改称しその法灯を今日に伝えてきました。 建長五年（1253年）、道元は療養先の京都にて入滅します。永平寺二祖となった懐英は永平寺境内に塔を建て承陽庵と号して道元を供養しました。いまも祖廟・承陽殿として引き継がれています。 応安五年（1272年）、永平寺は後円融天皇から「日本曹洞第一道場」と記された勅額を下賜され、曹洞宗の第一の道場として朝廷から認められました。その原書（重要文化財）は、現在も永平寺に残されています。 平成27年（2015年）、ミシュラン・グリーンガイド・ジャポンで二つ星の評価を得るなど、近年、永平寺は海外からも注目される寺院となっています。 曹洞宗大本山／ 福井県吉田郡永平寺町 ____________________________________________________ Eiheiji Temple is a Soto sect buddhist temple located in Eiheiji-cho, Yoshida-gun, Fukui Prefecture. Along with Sojiji Temple, it is the head temple of the Soto sect of Buddhism in Japan. The temple was founded by Dogen Zenji. Eiheiji's 800-year history has been marked by difficulties. Eiheiji has suffered from the loss of the temple due to a fire and the waves of the times, and has continued to suffer from poverty and reconstruction to today. Eiheiji is located in a forest of old cedar trees in a remote mountainous area, and is lined with more than 70 temples and pavilions. The main buildings, called Shichido Garan (seven halls), are connected by corridors, including the gate, Buddhist temple, Dharma hall, monks' hall, large storehouse, bathrooms, and toji. Shichido Garan is considered to be especially important as a clean place for monks to practice asceticism. Even today, around 200 Unsui monks are engaged in rigorous Zen ascetic practices. The ascetic practices at Eiheiji are said to be the most severe in the Zen sect. The founder of the Soto sect, Dogen, was born in 1200. At the age of 14, he entered Enryaku-ji Temple on Mt. Hiei, and in 1223, he traveled to the Song dynasty (Sung dynasty) in China, returning to Japan four years later after completing his ascetic training. Upon his return to Japan, Dogen faced severe persecution from the old Buddhist power, Hieizan. At the request of Hatano Yoshishige, a follower of Dogen who owned land in Echizen, Dogen went to Echizen to avoid persecution. The year is 1243. In 1244, Dogen built the Daibutsuji Temple on this site. This was the founding of Eiheiji, which was renamed Eiheiji in 1246 and has been passed down to the present day. In 1253, Dogen died in Kyoto, where he was convalescing. Kaiei, who became the second founder of Eiheiji, built a pagoda on the Eiheiji temple grounds and named it Shoyoan to honor Dogen. It is still used as the ancestral mausoleum, Shoyoden. In 1272, Eiheiji received an imperial inscription from Emperor Goenryu stating that it was the "First Dojo of the Soto Sect in Japan," and was recognized by the Imperial Court as the first Dojo of the Soto Sect. The original (Important cultural property) is still preserved at Eiheiji. In 2015, Eiheiji received a two-star rating in the Michelin Green Guide Japon, and in recent years, Eiheiji has been attracting attention from overseas as well.
