For newpolyphonies, Myriam Van Imschoot was inspired by insects, climate marches and the recent manifestations against cutbacks in the arts and in society. Her guiding principle is not the loud chanting of the crowd, but the experience that each individual, like a link in a chain, can set a vortex of sounds in motion. In newpolyphonies, polyphony is both the trigger and the question. How can we understand this musical legacy today? What is the potential of harmony? newpolyphonies is a meditative, machinic, messianic, mimetic and mesmerizing piece. Myriam Van Imschoot makes performances, creates sound poetry and vocal pieces, exhibits video and sound installations. She holds a unique position in the Belgian art field, moving between institutional fields and media, with a keen interest to experiment with contexts when not creating her own. HYOID is a Brussels-based group of vocal soloists specialized in new music. The classically trained singers’ vast experience and extended techniques enable HYOID to approach every production with an open mind. The group challenges and expands traditional concert formats.
