The Easiest Way to Paint a Sunset: Wet Sky, Dry Sea

Master the sunset by learning why I paint the water DRY. In this tutorial, I show you the easiest way to balance soft, glowing clouds with crisp, sparkling ripples by using two foundational watercolour techniques. The Techniques: The Sky (Wet-on-Wet): To get those seamless, glowing gradients, we start by pre-wetting the paper. This allows the pigment to bloom and soften, creating a realistic, hazy sunset sky without hard edges. The Sea (Dry-on-Dry): Ironically, the secret to realistic water is using a "dry" brush on dry paper. By skipping a brush with very little moisture across the surface, the "tooth" of the paper creates natural white highlights that look just like sunlight hitting the waves.
