In this episode of Southwest Florida in Focus, we explore compelling local stories shaping our community: Baseball player saved from heart attack, and a new cardiac health program: Every forty seconds, someone in the United States suffers a heart attack. WGCU’s Bryan Montheil shares the story on how changes in technology and the quick thinking of a bystander helped save one man who experienced an unexpected heart attack. Then we sit down with the director of Lee Health’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Program, Marion Harris Baxter, and WGCU’s own Managing Editor Mike Braun. After a chance discovery, Braun went through the program and talks about what he learned. Prayer vigils and protests held in response to ICE activity: This week saw a varying public response following the death of Alex Pretti, an ICU nurse shot and killed by US Customs and Border Protection agents while protesting in Minnesota. WGCU’s Kate Cronin covers Florida Gulf Coast University campus, where students stepped out of class to protest the 287(g) agreement. The state-mandated program gives university police the ability to detain students. In Naples, WGCU’s Michael Hayslip details a vigil commemorating the passing of Pretti. Among those in attendance was Pretti's former teacher, who we speak to about what she believes his death will mean for future protests. Experience the story of Titanic: An Immersive Voyage through VR technology: A new exhibit in Tampa gives viewers a chance to walk through the Titanic. With to-scale room recreations, detailed projections, and numerous rescued artifacts, Titanic: An Immersive Voyage puts you in the shoes of a passenger. WGCU’s Jennifer Crawford talks with executive producer John Zaller about the exposition’s cutting-edge VR technology, which concludes with the experience of diving to the bottom of the ocean to explore the modern shipwreck. The unique challenges of dating in Southwest Florida: Valentine’s weekend brings a dating expert to share where to look for a partner. April Davis, founder of Luma Luxy Matchmaking, explains how the distinctive demographic of Southwest Florida can make dating a challenge. WGCU’s Jennifer Crawford asks the important questions like how to spot red flags, the best activities to spark connections, and the effect of dating apps. #HeartHealth #HeartAttack #LeeHealth #LeeCounty #GoRedForWomen #Immigration #Detention #Legal #ICE #BorderPolice #PrayerVigil #Naples #FGCU #Protest #287G #AlexPretti #Titanic #Tampa #VirtualReality #Immersion #History #Dating #ValentinesDay #Matchmaker #Love #DatingApps #WGCU #SouthwestFlorida
