In 1296, John de Warenne, the 6th Earl of Surrey, emerged victorious over John Comyn, the Earl of Buchan, in the Battle of Dunbar. Subsequently, King John Balliol surrendered to King Edward I of England at Brechin on July 10th, leading to Scottish landholders acknowledging Edward's authority. The year 1297 saw Moray sparking a rebellion in northern Scotland, swiftly gaining control over Urquhart, Inverness, Elgin, Banff, and Aberdeen by late summer. In September, Wallace joined forces with Moray near Dundee, and together they advanced towards Stirling, a pivotal location described by Stuart Reid as "the key to Scotland."
