Part 1 of 4 drum overhead microphone comparison videos. Part 1 is a sparse and sludgy groove with a low-tuned snare. The overheads are pretty low/close in, 80cm from the snare. Each overhead mic is presented soloed first, then with the kick and snare microphones included, just for context. The overhead microphones compared were: AEA R88 (stereo ribbon) T-bone RB-500s (large ribbon) Bumblebee RM5s (small ribbon) M-Audio Sputniks (Tube LDC) Rode NT1-As *with modded RK47 capsules (FET LDC) Line Audio CM4s (FET SDC) Shure SM57s (dynamic) Kick: AKG C214 Snare: Shure SM57 Drums: Gretsch Catalina Club Shells, Ludwig Acrolite Snare Signal Chain: Mics -- Behringer SD16 -- Behringer X32 -- Logic Pro X All the microphones were placed in the 'Recorderman' configuration; LH dead over the centre of the snare and RH over the drummer's right shoulder. Both microphones were 80cm from the snare drum and were equidistant to the kick drum as well (ie, phase and time aligned). No EQ or Processing was used on any of the overhead microphones or the kick and snare, just level matching as best as possible. As all 14 microphones were placed at the same time, it wasn't possible to get each in exactly the same location around the drumkit, but I did my best to get them clumped as closely as possible. The room is a medium-sized lounge/living room, with 10 thick Rockwool panels hanging from the walls/ceiling - it is quite a dry room, nothing special. Many thanks to Barney Sage for playing the drums!
