Written, produced and edited by Surat Lozowick. Shambhala Healing Center has been serving medical marijuana patients in the Mission District since opening in January 2011, but is set to close after their landlord received a letter from U.S. Attorney Melinda Haag, threatening criminal prosecution, imprisonment, fines, and seizure of assets. The letter was received due to the dispensary's proximity to Jose Coronado Playground, but this was addressed by the city when Shambhala opened and it was determined that the playground was inactive and didn't pose a problem. Nonetheless, marijuana remains illegal at the federal level, and in a statement, the U.S. Attorney's Office defended the letters to Shambhala and other dispensaries: "Although all marijuana stores are illegal under federal law, we decided to use our limited resources to address those that are in close proximity to schools, parks and playgrounds. We hope that those who believe marijuana stores should be left to operate without restriction can step back for a moment and understand that not everyone shares their point of view, and that the United States Attorney's Office has received many phone calls, letters and emails from people who are deeply troubled by the tremendous growth of the marijuana industry and its influence on their communities. Since the United States Attorney's Office sent the letters, we have received even more complaints relating to schools, and now from cities that have banned dispensaries yet still have them opening and refusing to abide by local law." With its longterm future unclear, Shambhala plans to stay open until the first week of April, and ideally to implement a delivery service while options are weighed.
