All of us who think that we are in spiritual path have several thoughts/questions like - How to please God easily? What is the easiest path to attain him? Even the greatest of people who have achieved many worldly tasks unlike the others also get these doubts quite naturally. Long ago, a king named Ashwashira got a similar desire. He was a great warrior and adhered to righteousness (dharma) He, once won over all the kings who are his contemporaries and utilising the entire money he had, undertook a very big yaga (ritual). It was going on very well. At that time, sage Kapila and sage Jaigishya came there to see the ritual. We can discuss about the beautiful story of sage Jaigishya later. It is very good. Ashwashira revered the sages and honoured them accordingly. Later, gradually taking about all other matters, he finally put forward his heartfelt desire. He said, "O revered ones! You are all extremely great. We are the common people living in this world. For people like us, if at all there is any idea to please the Paramapurusha Vishnu easily, then kindly tell us." They smiled gently and said, "We are in the form of Vishnu. Worship us. That itself is the easiest way" Ashwashira got furious. He thought that they would give him a mantra, tantra or an idea but on the contrary they spoke in this manner. He could not control his anger. Despite all that, without exposing his anger, he humbly said, "O revered ones! Do not say in a disrespectful manner just because I have asked. Even though I have not seen God before, I still know how Lord Vishnu looks like. I very well know his form which is described by the Vedas and scriptures. He has Garuda as his vehicle. He adorns conch and discus. You do not have all these. Then, how can you become Vishnu? Why are you saying so?" Ashwashira did not even complete his words. Meanwhile, Sage Kapila appeared in the form of Lord Vishnu and sage Jaigishya became Garuda. Even then, Ashwashira was not contented. Sage Kapila is no ordinary one. He is an incarnation. We can discuss about this later. Laughing at them, Ashwashira said, " Why are you showing your illusory forms to me? If you are Vishnu, then where is the lotus in your navel region? Where is Brahma in it?" Immediately, a lotus is born from the navel of Kapila and Jaigishya became the Brahma in it. However, Ashwashira did not agree. He at once told that this is all because of illusion. The sages did not speak anything. They simply disappeared. Ashwashira looked here and there for them. Meanwhile, thousands of wild animals came there and were destroying the place of Yaga. Ashwashira could not understand anything for a while. He stood puzzled seeing the place filled with cruel animals everywhere. All the priests were running out of fear. By then, the king understood his mistake and gave up his ego. He wholeheartedly prayed to the sages and they reappeared in front of him. They said, "O king! You have asked the easy idea to attain Vishnu. He does not reside at a place. He is the one who is spread in all the things of the world. Keeping this point in mind, rendering your possible help to the beings around you is the easiest way to reach Vishnu. We wanted you to know this and hence took these forms. It is not just to showcase our powers". From the story, we understand that God is all pervading. Jai Guru Datta! Sri Guru Datta!
