The Christmas Oratorio by Johann Sebastian Bach has been called one of the pinnacles of world music. Its Cantata No. 1 is particularly popular, with its rousing “Jauchzet, frohlocket!” (“Shout for joy, exult!”) in the opening chorus. The first cantata of the Christmas Oratorio was performed and recorded live at a festive Christmas concert on December 26, 2023 in the Berlin Cathedral. Performers: the Berlin State and Cathedral Choir, the Girls Choir of the Berlin Sing-Akademie, the Ukrainian Vocal Ensemble Kammerton, the lautten compagney Berlin and soloists Johannes Gaubitz, Neima Fischer, Julia Böhme and Cornelius Uhle. The conductor is Kai-Uwe Jirka, director of the Berlin State and Cathedral Choir and artistic director of the Berlin Sing-Akademie. Part I of the Christmas Oratorio has 9 movements: (00:00) 1. Jauchzet, frohlocket! (Shout for joy, exult!) (chorus) (07:43) 2. Es begab sich aber zu der Zeit (It came to pass at that time) (recitative) (09:02) 3. Nun wird mein liebster Bräutigam (Now my dearest bridegroom) (recitative) (09:50) 4. Bereite dich, Zion (Prepare yourself, Zion) (aria) (14:37) 5. Wie soll ich dich empfangen (How shall I embrace You) (chorale) (16:27) 6. Und sie gebar ihren ersten Sohn (And she bore her first son) (recitative) (16:49) 7. Er ist auf Erden kommen arm (He came to earth poor); Wer will die Liebe recht erhöhn (Who can rightly exalt this love) (chorale and recitative) (19:29) 8. Großer Herr und starker König (Great Lord, o powerful King) (aria) (24:06) 9. Ach mein herzliebes Jesulein (Ah, my heart’s beloved little Jesus) (chorale) Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750) most likely composed the first cantata of the Christmas Oratorio in 1734 when he was Thomaskantor in Leipzig. He wrote the first part for Christmas Day, December 25. Bach's Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248) is popular not least because the Christmas story from the Gospel of Luke is told in installments in recitatives. Between the recitatives are arias and chorales, in which the biblical text is commented on or reflected upon. The chorales are stanzas from Lutheran hymns. It is not known who wrote the elaborately composed libretto. Bach's Christmas Oratorio is considered the quintessence of Baroque music. It was typical for music in the Baroque era to be performed by small orchestras. This performance of the Christmas classic also features a small orchestra, some members of which even play period instruments. This could possibly come close to the orchestral sound of Bach's time. Let this gem of Baroque music put you in the Christmas mood once again!
