For choir, three trombones, percussion and string quartet. Salzburg Festival; accentus chamber choir, Camerata Salzburg, cond. Laurence Equilbey. In his new work Infin che 'l mar fu sovra noi richiuso ("Until the sea above us closed again") Johannes Maria Staud has set a text from Dante's Divine Comedy to music. The use of three trombones serves as a reference to the city's famous son, as they are also included in Mozart's Requiem. The title refers to the last verse of the singing of Inferno of the Divine Comedy of Dante Alighieri. It describes the last act of the mad flight of Ulysses in front of the mountain of Purgatory. Odysseus and his companions arrived in the sea voyage as far as human reason could lead, but the God that they have not known can not afford that they penetrate into the knowledge of a world that belongs to the sphere of his revelation. The sinking in the unknown of that sea is the sign of the absolute limits of human knowledge only. Art: Secundino Hernandez
